To keep kids safe, ask the right questions

When picking up the children in your care from a playdate, after-school program, or any other event where you are not accompanying them, rather than asking them, “Were you good?” “Did you behave?” or “Did you listen?” think about asking them these questions instead:

  • Did you enjoy yourself?
  • How did you spend your time?
  • What was your favorite part of the party/event/etc?
  • What was your least favorite part?
  • Did you feel safe?
  • Is there anything else that you want to share?

These questions illicit more than just yes or no answers and empower your child to think more critically about their experiences.
